Self-Taught Art

Morgan Steele

Morgan Steele's oeuvreis full references that suggest nothing in particular and images that are appropriated without regard to their origins–an odd juxtaposing of cars, rats, planes, cows, roosters and fish. He practiced a sort of "cartoon surrealism" in which the formal quest of "just trying to fill the space" is similar to "killing time." But days spent patiently transforming imagery borrowed from popular culture and classical painting into a type of contemporary clip art coalesce as encryptions that, like hieroglyphs, appear codified and impenetrable to the uninitiated.
